This 8-day expedition follows the classic Central Circuit Trail, culminating in a technical ascent of Margherita Peak (5,109 m) on Mount Stanley, the highest point in Uganda and the Rwenzori Mountains.
The route is carefully paced for proper acclimatization, glacier safety, and full completion of the Central Circuit loop. It combines dense equatorial forest, high-altitude bogs, alpine passes, glaciers, and historic mountaineering routes.
This expedition is suitable for physically fit hikers and experienced trekkers, with the Margherita summit attempt reserved for those comfortable with altitude, cold conditions, and technical terrain.

Day 1: Nyakalengija → Nyabitaba Hut
Trek through tropical forest and river valleys to Nyabitaba Hut. Wildlife sightings are possible.
Day 2: Nyabitaba → John Matte Hut
Cross Kurt Shafer Bridge, bamboo forest, and mossy cliffs with views of Mount Stanley.
Day 3: John Matte → Bujuku Hut

Day 4: Bujuku → Elena Hut

Meet your guide and transfer to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park gates briefing point at Mihunga. After registration, safety briefing, and meeting your guides and porters, the trek begins.
The trail follows the Mubuku River through dense tropical forest, crossing the Mahoma River before a steady climb onto a high ridge. Along the way, you may hear chimpanzees and spot black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and the brightly colored Rwenzori turaco.
Arrive at Nyabitaba Hut for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, descend through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, located at the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. The trail then enters a bamboo forest before tackling a long, slippery stretch of moss-covered rock.
From Nyamuleju Rock Shelter, enjoy your first clear views of Mount Stanley, Margherita Peak, and Mount Speke. Vegetation transitions into giant heather, lobelia, and alpine flora as you ascend.
Reach John Matte Hut for dinner and overnight.

Descend briefly to cross the Bujuku River, then enter the Lower Bigo Bog, famous for its giant lobelias and long wooden boardwalks. The open valley creates a surreal alpine atmosphere.
A steep forested section leads into the Upper Bigo Bog, eventually opening to Lake Bujuku, set between Mount Baker and Mount Stanley.
Arrive at Bujuku Hut, an important base for climbers heading to Mount Speke and Mount Stanley. Overnight at the hut.

After crossing muddy terrain, begin a steep climb through forests of giant groundsels toward Groundsel Gully. The trail ascends sharply to Scott Elliot Pass (4,372 m), the highest point on the Central Circuit.
From the pass, enjoy panoramic views of Mount Baker, Mount Luigi di Savoia, and the upper slopes of Mount Stanley. The descent to Elena Hut is rocky and can be slippery in wet or icy conditions.

An early alpine start marks summit day. Equipped with crampons, ropes, harnesses, and headlamps, you climb toward the Stanley Glacier, crossing exposed rock, ice, and snow.
The ascent passes over multiple glaciers, including the Stanley Plateau, before the final scramble to Margherita Peak, the highest point in the Rwenzoris.
Due to altitude, cold, and technical terrain, this climb is strictly for physically fit and well-acclimatized climbers. After summiting, descend carefully back to Elena Hut for rest and overnight.

After breakfast, descend through an alpine zone of sparse vegetation and large boulders. The trail leads past the scenic Kitandara Lakes, surrounded by dramatic mountain walls.

FreshField Pass
Ascend steeply along the headwall beneath Mount Baker, continuing to Freshfield Pass. From the pass, follow a high alpine trail before beginning a long descent through rocky terrain.
Pass Bujongolo Rock Shelter, historically used during the Duke of Abruzzi expedition in 1906, before reaching Guy Yeoman Hut for overnight.

Descend the steep cliffs of Kichuchu, then cross boggy sections and the Mubuku River twice through bamboo forest. Rejoin the trail to Nyabitaba Hut, then continue descending through the forest to Mihunga Gate and Nyakalengija, marking the end of the expedition.
Yes & No. This expedition is not suitable for beginners because it includes the Margherita Summit; however, with sufficient resilience, anyone can conquer the Rwenzori Mountains due to the adequate acclimatization provided in this expedition. The Margherita Peak summit involves glacier travel, altitude exposure, cold temperatures, and technical climbing. Prior trekking or mountaineering experience is strongly recommended.
