3-Day Rwenzori Loop Trek via Kilembe Trail | Samalira Falls hike
Rwenzori Loop Trek via Kilembe Trail | Sine Camp & Samalira Falls. Explore the Rwenzori Mountains on a 3-day loop trek via the Kilembe Trail. Hike to Sine Camp and Samalira Falls through rainforest, bamboo, and giant heather zones.
To get a feel for the Rwenzori Mountains without committing to a lengthy trek, the best option is the 3-day Rwenzori Loop Trek along the Kilembe Trail. A concentrated ecological and cultural journey, it ascends deeply into the Afro-alpine zones before circling back through a different descent; it is not a watered-down version of the longer treks.
The hike begins at Trekkers Hostel Kyanjuki and ascends through the Rwenzori mountains via the scenic Nyamwamba Valley, which is close to the ancient Kilembe Copper Mines. As early as the first day on the trail, the scenery becomes apparent: towering Afro-montane forests, frequent river crossings, waterfalls, and thick vegetation teeming with wildlife.
Trek Highlights by Days: 3-Day Rwenzori Loop Trek via Kilembe Trail.
- Day 1: Afro-Montane Forest to Sine Camp
- Day 2: Bamboo, Heather, and Alpine Valleys to Samalira Camp
- Day 3: Descent via Nyamwamba Valley to Basecamp
Detailed (Day by Day) of the 3-Day Rwenzori Loop Trek via Kilembe Trail
Day 1: Afro-Montane Forest to Sine Camp
Gaining more than 1,100 meters in elevation is a continuous and strenuous ascent on the first day. Blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and various forest birds can be seen frequently along the trail as it winds through towering trees covered in lichen and moss.
After crossing the river, the trail steepens significantly, serving as a reminder to hikers that the Rwenzori mountains pose a significant challenge. Sine Camp (2,596 m) is on a narrow ridge in the woods that looks out over waterfalls and rapids below. One of the most photogenic waterfalls on the Kilembe Trail is Enock’s Falls, which is close by and surrounded by bright green plants and hanging vines.

Evenings at Sine Camp are quiet and atmospheric, with campfires, forest sounds, and conversations with local guides who know these mountains intimately.
Day 2: Bamboo, Heather, and Alpine Valleys to Samalira Camp
Day two isn’t as long, but it packs more variety into that little time. After a steep ascent through a bamboo zone, the trail enters a mixed montane forest, a haven for a variety of birds thanks to the abundance of fruiting trees. The Rwenzori turaco’s call and, on rare occasions, flight, are the most striking features.
Above 3,000 meters, the forest gives way to the giant heather zone, where trees reach up to 15 meters high, coated in moss and βold manβs beardβ lichen. The landscape begins to feel otherworldly.
The trail goes down gently after passing high ridges and open alpine valleys with giant lobelias. It ends at Samalira Camp (3,170 m), which is in a sheltered dip with wide views of the surrounding ridges and valleys. Although it is only the second night out, this camp feels remote and distinctly alpine.
Day 3: Descent via Nyamwamba Valley to Basecamp
The final day completes the loop, descending through bamboo forests back into the Afro-montane zone. This route offers a different perspective of the mountains: quieter, greener, and rich in wildlife.

The optional descent along the Nyamwamba River is especially scenic, with moss-covered trees, cascading water, and deep forest corridors. It is a fitting finale, gradually returning trekkers to the park gate and basecamp with worn legs and a real sense of having entered the Rwenzori, not just visited them.
