Although challenging on a mental and physical level, this expedition is within reach for many. Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime, full of incredible personal growth and stunning natural scenery.
People who go gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can see a gorilla family for an hour; the trek is challenging. Gorilla trekking is an all-year activity; however, the paths are less likely to be muddy and treacherous in the wet months and better in the dry season of June–September and December–February. The location of the gorilla family determines the length of the walk, which can be anything from 30 minutes to several hours.
Kibale National Park in Uganda is the best place to go chimpanzee hiking because you have a decent chance of seeing them there. The chimpanzee trek usually lasts 2 to 5 hours, and it includes one hour to watch the chimpanzees. At the Kanyanchu Visitor Center, park rangers are excited to share their knowledge with you as your adventure begins. To keep up with the calls and movements of a habituated chimpanzee community, guides lead small groups of no more than eight people into the lush rainforest.

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe. Welcome to Uganda
Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, our friendly safari guide will be ready to greet you and escort you to your hotel by beautiful Lake Victoria. When you arrive, you can choose to unwind or enjoy a relaxing stroll around the lake after your flight.
After reaching your hotel, your driver will cover in detail the upcoming trip to the Rwenzori Mountains and the best way to trek with gorillas. You will have the opportunity to spend the night in Entebbe.
Accommodation: 2Friends Beach Hotel
Day 2: Entebbe & Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Today, you will visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to about half of the world’s mountain gorillas. The journey showcases the breathtaking Ugandan landscape, and the drive lasts for around 9 hours.
While you’re on the road, stop at Igongo Cultural Centre Mbarara for some traditional Ugandan cuisine for an en route lunch. Make it to the lodge by dusk after continuing through the picturesque countryside in southwestern Uganda. Before tomorrow’s gorilla trek, have supper and get some rest.
Accommodation: Rushaga Gorilla Lodge
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
This day is likely to be one of your most memorable travel experiences. After a delicious breakfast, meet at the park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing. UWA skilled Ranger guides will lead you into the dense jungle in search of a gorilla family. The trek may be difficult due to steep inclines and muddy trails, but the outcome is well worth the effort.

When you find the mountain gorillas, you will have the unique opportunity to spend an hour viewing these tranquil and giant creatures in their natural habitat. Their daily behaviors, such as playing, eating, and speaking, might reveal a lot about their lives. Following this memorable experience, you should return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. Visit the nearby villages of Bakiga and Batwa in the evening. There you can learn about their culture and way of life.
Accommodation: Rushaga Gorilla Lodge
Day 4: Bwindi & Transfer to Kasese Town
After breakfast, leave Bwindi and drive north to Kasese through Uganda’s magnificent southwest countryside. You’ll pass through Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Rift Valley escarpment along the way.
As the Rwenzori Mountains come into view, the terrain changes from savannah to mountain foothills. Make it to Kasese town by the end of the afternoon. Stay overnight in Kasese.
Accommodation: Ihamba Lakeside Safari Lodge
Day 5: Kilembe Trailhead & Hike to Sine Hut (2,596m)
The Rwenzori trek begins at 1,450 meters and ascends 1,146 meters to Sine Hut at 2,596 meters, where you will spend the night. Hikers can anticipate spending 5–6 hours in the Afro-Montane Forest Zone, which is home to majestic trees, various birds, and, on rare occasions, primates such as chimpanzees and blue monkeys.
The trail is in fair condition, but you’ll need to watch your step owing to the muddy and occasionally dangerous circumstances. The landscape changes as you rise higher; the woodland thickens and the air becomes cooler. Sine Hut is located on a ridge overlooking a stunning waterfall, not far from the bamboo zone. As you retire to the hut for the night, enjoy the peaceful woodland scenery and listen to the chirping. As night sets, gather around the fire and share stories about your trek with the other hikers.
Day 6: Trek from Sine Hut to Mutinda Camp (3,588m)
You will spend the night at Sine Hut at 2,596 meters, after ascending 1,146 meters on the Rwenzori climb, which starts at 1,450 meters. In the Afro-Montane Forest Zone, where hikers may see a variety of birds, regal trees, and, very rarely, primates like chimpanzees and blue monkeys, one should expect to spend five or six hours on foot.

Due to the muddy and potentially hazardous conditions, you should exercise caution when walking the reasonably maintained trail. The terrain changes as you go higher; the forest gets denser and the temperature drops. Near the bamboo zone, on a ridge, sits Sine Hut, which offers breathtaking views of a waterfall. As you settle in for the night, enjoy the peaceful forest and birdsong. As the sun goes down, be sure to gather around the campfire to swap tales of your journey with fellow hikers.
Day 7: Trek from Mutinda Camp to Bugata Camp (4,062m)
Today, you will have to be careful as you trek through the muddy Mutinda Valley. You will need to avoid the tussock grass and the perennial flowers that have giant lobelias growing among them. The Namusangi Valley, with waterfalls on the rocks, is accessible via the path. The climb takes 5 or 6 hours, but there are stunning views at every step. Some of the plants in the Rwenzori Mountains are strange and beautiful, making the area feel otherworldly.
Perched high above Lake Bugata, Bugata Camp offers stunning views. Take in the sun and relax in this perfect place. After a long hike, you and your companions can unwind with a hot lunch and discuss your experiences.
Day 8: Trek from Bugata Camp to Hunwick’s Camp (3,974m)
Bamwanjara Pass is noted for its bogs, lush forest, and breathtaking mountain views; your trek through it begins early. This 6- to 7-hour hike ascends and lowers various hills while providing beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. While this trek is physically demanding, the spectacular views and wonderful sense of accomplishment make it well worth the effort.
Hunwick’s Camp offers amazing views of Weismanns Peak, Mount Stanley, and Mount Baker. Warm yourself with some food and get some sleep before embarking on your adventure the following day.
Day 9: Trek from Hunwick’s Camp to Margherita Camp (4,485m)
There may be some challenging ascents and rough terrain during today’s 6–7-hour journey. Before reaching Margherita Camp, you must descend to the floor of Lake Kitendara’s valley and then ascend to Scott Elliott’s pass. You should take it easy and drink plenty of water because the air gets thinner and you can feel the effects of being at a higher altitude.
The ancient Margherita Camp was the starting point for the Duke of Abruzzi’s 1906 ascent. Because of the camp’s proximity to the glacier, nighttime lows can be rather low. Get some rest and wrap up warm before setting out for the summit attempt the next day. Your guides will brief you before you leave for the park in the early morning.
Day 10: Summit Margherita Peak (5,109m) & Return to Hunwick’s Camp
At two o’clock this morning, you will start your last hike to Margherita Peak. It takes 7 to 9 hours to complete the climb, which includes walking on the Stanley glaciers and climbing over rocks. This part of the trek is the hardest and most thrilling so far. It requires technical skills and the ability to keep going.

You will cross the Stanley Glacier using crampons and ice axes, with your mountain guides to make sure you are safe. The plan is to get to the top by 10 a.m.
At the top of the Rwenzori Mountains, Margherita Peak, you will see beautiful views of the nearby hills, valleys, and glaciers. Before you start to descend down, take a moment to enjoy the Mountains of the Moon.
As you go back to Hunwick’s camp, make sure you follow the same path you took before. The drop can be just as hard, so stay focused and rest when you need to. At Hunwick’s Camp, you can enjoy a tasty lunch and a break that you have earned to celebrate your success.
Day 11: Descend from Hunwick’s Camp to Kiharo Camp
Climbing a ridge toward McConnell’s Prong, where you can view all three peaks, is where the trip starts today. The Nyamwamba River confluence, which runs through Kilembe and Kasese to Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park, is where the trail then crosses beneath Weismann’s Peak.

McConnell’s Prong
The trail leads to Kiharo Camp, which is located in a deep valley with steep cliffs and thick vegetation, after passing the confluence. The ideal setting for unwinding and thinking back on your mountain journey is Kiharo Camp.
Day 12: Descend from Kiharo Camp Kilembe & Transfer to Fort Portal
Today, set out on a 6-7 hour journey through the lush Nyambwamba Valley. The trail goes down the Nyamwamba Valley, mostly downhill, past moss-covered boulders that line the river. Along the trip, you’ll witness steep valleys, waterfalls, woodlands, and possibly duikers or other wildlife.
Before heading to Kilembe, stop at Forest View Camp for a picnic. After your late afternoon arrival, you can unwind at Trekkers Hostel.
Accommodation: Trekkers Hostel
Day 13: Crater Lake Hike & Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park.
Following breakfast, proceed to Fort Portal for a drive around the breathtaking Crater Lakes. The Crater Lakes drive navigates through picturesque trails, providing expansive views of the crater lakes and the adjacent landscapes. Following lunch in Fort Portal, proceed to Kibale National Park, renowned for its abundant primate population and varied birdlife.
Upon arrival at your accommodation, take the time to settle in and appreciate the natural surroundings. The evening presents an opportunity for relaxation, whether through a stroll around the camp or a serene moment to appreciate the sounds of the forest. The dinner service will take place at the camp.
Accommodation: Turaco TreeTops
Day 14: Chimpanzee Tracking & Bigodi Swamp Walk
You’ll kick off your day with a lovely early morning breakfast before making your way to the park office for a briefing on chimpanzee tracking.

With our knowledgeable safari guides, you’ll venture into the lush forest, your heart racing with excitement as the air comes alive with the sounds of chimpanzees. Before long, you’ll be right there with them, enjoying their playful antics, grooming sessions, and interactions.
After enjoying an hour with the chimps, head back to the starting point and then make your way to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, head over to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a lovely spot famous for its amazing biodiversity and fantastic bird-watching opportunities. Join us for a delightful guided walk through the swamp, where you can connect with the local community and discover their rich culture and way of life. Afterward, head back to your place for a cozy dinner and a restful overnight stay.
