Rwenzori Day Hike. Scenic Forest Hike & Lake Mahoma Trail
Hike from Nyakalengija (1650 m) to Nyabitaba Camp (2650 m) through villages, forests, wildlife, and the River Mahoma on this iconic one-day Rwenzori trek through the Central Circuit.
Commence the day with a morning briefing at the Rwenzori mountaineering services station. From here you will hire your guides, porters, chefs, and some essential tools you didn’t carry with you. Hiking from Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba is approximately 7 to 8 km; however, it takes 5 to 6 hours to ascend to Nyabitaba camp. The trail begins at Nyakalengija, which is at an altitude of 1650 m, and it’s the main access point to the Rwenzori Mountains.
The trail allows you to explore different agriculture plantations, trees, and small villages as you look for your way to Nyabitaba. You will continue with your journey as you climb over cliffs and bluffs, crossing River Mahoma, then ascend steeply into Nyabitaba camp.

On your hiking adventure expect to spot some animals such as white and black colobus monkeys, three-horned chameleons, and many more. Your guide will also give you proper knowledge about different plants, such as ferns and bamboo groves.
However, not forgetting that Rwenzori is among the best birding destinations, you will still see various bird species, such as the Rwenzori Blue Turaco.
While at Nyabitaba camp, you will walk through the bamboo forest zone up to Lake Mahoma. Lake Mahoma is among the unique wonders at the camp, and it lies among the glacial lakes.
Lake Mahoma is among the deepest and largest of the 52 lakes that are within the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. While still at the camp, you will have clear views of stunning peaks such as Mount Baker and Mount Stanley. Nyabitaba camp is among the ideal places for photography while at the Rwenzori mountains. After enjoying your adventure, descend down to Nyakalengija for transfer to the next destination.
