Mount Gessi—Rwenzori Mountains Peak in Uganda.
Mount Gessi is a twin-summit peak in Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains, rising to about 4,715 meters. Learn its location, elevation, routes, and trekking significance.
Mount Gessi is one of the major high-altitude peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains, located along the Uganda–Democratic Republic of Congo border within Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Rising to approximately 4,715 meters (15,469 feet), Mount Gessi is notable for its twin summits and its position between Mount Stanley and Mount Emin.
Often climbed as part of longer Rwenzori expeditions, Mount Gessi offers a demanding alpine experience marked by rugged ridgelines, bog-filled valleys, and dramatic Afro-alpine scenery. While less famous than Margherita Peak, it plays a critical role in the geography and mountaineering logic of the Rwenzori range.

Mount Gessi lies in the central section of the Rwenzori Mountains, straddling the international boundary between Uganda and DR Congo. The peak sits between the Mount Stanley massif to the south and Mount Emin to the north, making it a natural transition point within the range.
It is closely linked to the Bujuku Valley, which is a major high-altitude basin that trekkers use to follow the Central Circuit Trail. This strategic position makes Mount Gessi a defining landmark in the heart of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Mount Gessi reaches an elevation of approximately 4,715 meters, making it one of the six highest mountains in the Rwenzori range. The mountain is defined by two principal summits:
-
Iolanda Peak
-
Bottego Peak
These twin peaks are connected by a rugged ridge system shaped by glacial erosion. The terrain includes steep rocky sections, marshy alpine valleys, and occasional glacial remnants, particularly on shaded slopes.
History of Mount Gessi
