Kilembe Trail, Rwenzori Mountains Trekking Route to Margherita Peak

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) oversees Rwenzori Trekking Services’ management of the Kilembe Trail, an exciting hiking trail in the Rwenzori Mountains. With its rich history, varied ecosystems, and difficult terrain, this trail provides hikers with an unforgettable adventure to Margherita Peak and beyond. In contrast to the more linear Central Circuit Trail, the Kilembe Trail takes hikers on a more personal and immersive journey through Uganda’s cultural and natural history.

The Kilembe Trail distinguishes itself from other routes by offering more than merely a summit. This Rwenzori Trail encompasses historical contexts, wildlife, and challenging environments, allowing hikers to explore some of the lesser-known summits of the Rwenzori, including Mount Baker, Speke, Luigi di Savoia, Emin, and Gessi. The Kilembe Trail traces its origins to 1895, when Professor Scott Elliot embarked on his pioneering expedition into the Rwenzori Mountains. This journey led to the naming of the Scott Elliot Pass, a significant landmark along the trail, honoring his exploration. Officially launched in 2011 by Rwenzori Trekking Services, the Kilembe Trail has since become a recognized and crucial route for hikers aiming to reach the peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. The trail’s establishment is a testament to the enduring spirit of exploration and the captivating allure of these majestic mountains.
