Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail: Trek to Margherita Peak & Iconic Rwenzori Summits

Explore the legendary Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail, Uganda’s premier route to Margherita Peak, Mount Stanley, Baker & Speke. Cross glacial valleys, bog boardwalks, and alpine zones on an epic mountaineering safari. Climb the breathtaking Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail, a world-famous climbing route that winds its way across Uganda’s “Mountains of the Moon.” Beginning at 1,651 meters at Mihunga Gate, this classic trail winds its way through verdant montane forest, bizarre bog landscapes, ice passageways, and breathtaking alpine zones.

At its peak, at 5,109 meters, Margherita Peak is the third-highest mountain in Africa. Climbing it is an optional final step. Climbers and ecotourists have made the Central Circuit their sacred pilgrimage for generations. The community-owned Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) maintains this trail. To the summits of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and Mount Speke, it is the quickest and most direct route.

Margherita Peak may once again be safely trekked to with the help of the new glacier bridge and support ropes installed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This has made reaching this high-altitude destination easier and safer than before. Hikers will stay in charming mountain lodges every seven to ten days, depending on their schedule. From the forest-rich Nyabitaba Hut to the glacier-kissed Elena Hut, the route offers the ideal blend of rugged wilderness, mountaineering adventure, and cultural immersion.

Attractions on the Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail.

The Central Circuit is a lovely refuge for unique and native animals, along with its rugged terrain and high altitude. Hikers in the lower areas may spot L’Hoest monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and perhaps even the elusive forest elephants. The trees up there are home to lovely birds like the Rwenzori turaco, the quirky weaver, and the charming francolin.

And then the plants! The enormous lobelias, intriguing groundsel forests, and lush carpets of moss create an alpine area that feels like it’s straight out of a Tolkien book, rather than tropical Africa.

The hike to Margherita Peak began again after a short break to make it safer. It was built by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to cross a crevasse on the Margherita Glacier. It also has new fixed climbing lines. This ensures that hikers can safely reach the summit.

With this important change, the trail is once again safe for hikers, and they can now reach one of Africa’s few remaining equatorial glaciers. Because of climate change, the ice cover has changed a lot, but the trip to Margherita is still beautiful and fun.

Why the Central Circuit Still Reigns Supreme

What makes the Central Circuit Trail the preferred route for most hikers?

  • It’s the most established and traditional route with decades of trekking heritage.

  • Access to multiple peaks, including Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and Mount Speke.

  • Rich biodiversity, including rare birds, mammals, and high-altitude flora.

Huts on the Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail

Trekking through the dramatic landscapes of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park isn’t just about peaks and panoramas; it’s also about the journey. And that journey is made possible by a system of high-altitude mountain huts that offer crucial shelter, comfort, and a place to recover amid one of Africa’s most stunning mountain ranges.

If you’re planning to hike the Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail, knowing where you’ll sleep each night is just as important as preparing your boots and backpack. Here’s your guide to the six official huts along the central circuit, each one playing a vital role in your highland adventure.

1. Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m)

First stop on the trail Located just 5–6 hours from the Mihunga trailhead, Nyabitaba Hut sits in the montane forest zone, surrounded by lush vegetation and towering trees. It’s the first overnight stop on the circuit and offers outstanding views of the Buraro River and, on clear days, Mount Stanley and Portal Peaks in the distance.

  • Elevation: 2,651 meters

  • Wildlife nearby: L’Hoest monkeys, Rwenzori turacos, and black-and-white colobus monkeys

  • Facilities: Dorm-style beds, pit latrine, water source

2. John Matte Hut (3,505m)

Gateway to the Alpine Zone. Perched on the edge of the Bigo Bogs, this hut lies at the transition from bamboo to heather and moorland. After a steep climb through lush forests and moss-covered rocks, John Matte Hut welcomes you with views of Mount Stanley and a close-up of the Bujuku River.

  • Elevation: 3,505 meters

  • Highlights: Boardwalks into the bogs, acclimatization point, good star views at night

  • Facilities: Wooden bunks, water stream nearby

3. Bujuku Hut (3,962m)

The high-altitude launchpad. Bujuku Hut is a favorite for those planning to summit Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, or Mount Baker. Located near Lake Bujuku, this hut offers a dramatic alpine setting surrounded by glaciers, bogs, and giant lobelias.

  • Best for: Peak climbers and acclimatization

  • Nearby peaks: Mount Stanley (Margherita Peak), Mount Speke, Mount Baker

  • Conditions: Colder and windier, but breathtakingly beautiful

4. Elena Hut (4,541m)

Basecamp for Margherita Peak. This is the highest hut on the Rwenzori Central Circuit, and it feels like it. Elena Hut is tucked onto a rocky outcrop near the Stanley Glacier and acts as the main basecamp for summiting Margherita Peak. Expect freezing temperatures, snow, and strong winds. The views at sunrise are unforgettable, with the glacier glowing under the first light.

  • Elevation: 4,541 meters

  • Facilities: Basic shelter (no insulation), best used for short overnight rest before a summit push

  • Advisory: Prepare for extreme cold and altitude; this hut is rugged and purely functional

5. Kitandara Hut (4,023m)

By the lake of “little birds.” Descending from Elena, Kitandara Hut offers a beautiful break by the Kitandara Lakes, known for their mystical beauty and reflection of snowcapped peaks. It’s a tranquil resting spot after a challenging summit and descent.

  • Elevation: 4,023 meters

  • Highlights: Stunning lakeside views, surrounded by heather and moss

  • Name meaning: “Kitandara” means “a place of birds” in the local Bakonzo language

6. Guy Yeoman Hut (3,505m)

A final hut on the loop. This hut marks the last overnight stop before returning to Nyabitaba and then back to Mihunga. Surrounded by rivers, waterfalls, and giant groundsel trees, Guy Yeoman Hut is a wonderful spot to reflect on your journey and rest your knees after days of trekking.

  • Elevation: 3,505 meters

  • Location: At the bottom of Kabamba Valley, near the Mobuku River

  • Terrain: Rocky and muddy in some seasons

What to Expect at the Huts

While basic, all Rwenzori huts are built to withstand the region’s extreme weather. Here’s what most offer:

  • Wooden bunks (bring your own sleeping bag and mat)

  • Rainwater collection or nearby stream access (boil or treat before drinking)

  • Pit latrines

  • Wooden platforms and shelter from rain/wind

  • Solar lighting (in a few huts)

Important Tip: There are no shops or resupply points in the mountains. Porters carry in all your gear, food, and fuel, so plan accordingly.

Unlike many treks in Africa that rely on tents, the Rwenzori hut system allows for lighter packs, better weather protection, and consistent sleeping arrangements even at 4,500 m. This network plays a crucial role in safe acclimatization and makes the Central Circuit accessible to more trekkers, from casual hikers to high-altitude climbers.

Each hut on the Rwenzori Central Circuit is more than just a place to sleep; it’s a chapter in your journey. From forest to glacier, these shelters mark your passage through one of the world’s most mysterious and awe-inspiring mountain ranges. So whether you’re dreaming of Margherita Peak or just exploring the mystical heart of Africa’s hidden highlands, rest easy. The mountains are waiting, and the huts are ready.
