Day 1: Nyakalengija (1650m) – Nyabitaba Camp (2650m)
This 5-day Rwenzori Trek to Edward’s Peak begins at Mihunga Gate, at the mountain’s foot. The official welcome and orientation for the 5-day Mount Baker hike will take place there. Your guides, whom you will also meet at this point, will direct you along the trails to the peak.
The steep topography supports a diverse range of animals, including three-horned chameleons, Rwenzori turacos, and playful colobus monkeys. Climb through its lush, towering trees to reach the summit. On this day, you will arrive at the camp after crossing rivers and navigating steep, challenging terrain. Relax in the shade of the Nyabitaba hut, a traditional wooden cottage, while admiring the stunning views of the gateway peaks from your campground.
Distance: 7km | Ascent: +1200 m | Duration: 5–6 hours
Overnight: Nyabitaba Camp
Day 2: Nyabitaba (2650 m)–Guyeoman Camp (3505 m)
From Nyabitaba, just take a left and enjoy the forest trail for about half an hour, and you’ll find yourself at the Kichuchu bridge.

After that, you’ll enjoy a couple of hours of pleasant walking through the bamboo forest. Then, things get a bit more challenging, almost like an adventure, as you navigate a long, tiring stretch of moss-covered rocks. As you ascend from the Kichuchu rock shelter, you can spot the gateway peaks and then step into the beautiful groundsel, lobelia, and impressive heather zone. Once you’ve made it through the tiring bog, you’ll finally reach Guyeoman camp. While you’re here, take a moment to enjoy the stunning view of Mount Baker in all its glory.
Duration: 6–7 hours
Overnight: Guyeoman Camp
Day 3: Guyeoman Camp—Freshfield Pass (4023m)
The trail begins at Guyeoman Camp and gently descends to cross the Mubuku River. It then leads to the Lower Bujongolo Rock Shelter, where the Italians stayed during their 1906 expedition. Following a brief respite, the track climbs sharply, jumping from tussock to tussock.

Fresh Field Pass
You eventually cross the bog, but your feet may end up slipping into the icy sludge. As you continue, you’ll reach Upper Freshfield Pass, where, on a clear day, you can see Kitandara Lakes Camp, Congolese homesteads, and the majestic Stanley, Baker, and Weisman Peaks.
Duration: 5–6 hours
Overnight: Freshfield Pass (wilderness camping)
Day 4: Summit Mount Baker—Return to Guyeoman Camp
On the fourth day of your five-day climb of Mount Baker, you will begin your ascent to the summit. Traverse the alpine zone of the Rwenzori Mountains, which is rich in groundsel. You will travel through the groundsel valley until you reach the exposed cliffs of Mount Baker. Persevere through the rugged terrain until you reach Edward Peak, Mount Baker’s highest peak. In this scenario, you can see Mount Stanley’s glacier, as well as the valleys below and the glacier-formed lakes. The sky and the sun are also clearly visible. After you’ve taken all of the essential shots, begin your journey down to the Guyeoman camp for the night.
Duration: 7–8 hours
Overnight: Guyeoman Camp
Day 5: Guyeoman Camp – Nyabitaba – Nyakalengija
You have 5 days to go until you reach Mount Baker’s peak. You will have begun your journey from Guyeoman and exited the highlands by that point. Trek down the Kichuchu cliff after navigating through the swamp and tussocks once more.

After crossing the Kicuchu bridge, continue into the bamboo jungle. You will reach Nyabitaba after lunch. As you descend the mountain, you’ll come across verdant forest scenery. To commemorate your achievement of reaching the peak of Rwenzori, a badge will be provided at the park entry. This trail is great for all hikers because it leads deep into the Rwenzori Mountains, where they can enjoy the beautiful views and peaceful atmosphere.
