Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary of the 5-Day Rwenzori Hike Mount Speke Trek

Day 1: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut (2651m)

You’ll start your hike in Nyakalengeji and go through lush forests that border the Mubuku River. Ascending the enormous summit exposes the beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains. Prepare to relax in the magnificence of nature at Nyabitaba Hut (2651m), where you will arrive as the day comes to an end. Enjoy the gorgeous scenery and prepare for a peaceful evening under the stars, surrounded by majestic mountains.

Day 2: Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut (3,380m)

You’ll have to hike along mossy cliffs and bamboo fields to get to John Matte Hut (3380 m). Take a break along the way to enjoy the beautiful views of Margherita and other Stanley Peaks. Take in the beautiful range of plants around you, from big trees to tiny wildflowers. As you hike over the rough ground, take in the beautiful scenery. You are getting closer to your objective with every step. Take a once-in-a-lifetime hike through the Rwenzori Mountains. The breathtaking views will leave you in awe.

Overnight: John Matte Hut

Day 3: John Matte to Bujuku Camp (3,962m)

After crossing the Bujuku River, you’ll arrive at the Lower Bigo Bog, a unique location filled with massive lobelias. While exploring, take in the breathtaking views of Mount Baker and Mount Stanley, which surround Lake Bujuku. Allow the breathtaking scenery to grab you as you make your way to Bujuku Camp (3962 m), your destination for the day. As you pass through the calm countryside, take in the spectacular splendor of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Overnight: Bujuku Camp

Day 4: Summit Mount Speke (4,890 m)—Return to John Matte

Begin the difficult trek up Mount Speke, which stands 4,890 meters high, via Scott Elliot Pass and Groundsel Gully. Join yourself for a breathtaking climb to the summit. After reaching the summit, descend to Bujuku. Stop and take in the amazing scenery as you walk. This adventure will challenge you, yet it will also offer a unique chance to appreciate the magnificence of nature. Enjoy breathtaking surroundings and a genuine sense of accomplishment as you prepare for an amazing journey.

Day 5: John Matte—Nyabitaba—Nyakalengija

As you descend the Rwenzori Mountains, trek from John Matte back to Nyabitaba. Go back to Nyakalengeji and reflect on the trials you overcame and the wonders you witnessed. Along the trip, learn about Mount Speke’s distinctive wildlife and vegetation, as well as its fascinating history. This trek will remain a wonderful hike in your mind.
