Detailed ( Day by Day ) of the 3-day Rwenzori Mountains trek to Sine & Samalira Camps via Kilembe Trail.
Day 1: Trek to Sine Camp (2,596 m)
Start Point: Trekkers Hostel, Kyanjuki
Altitude: 1,450 m → 2,596 m
Distance: 9.5 km
Hiking Time: 7–8 hours
The day begins with a morning briefing and guide introductions before setting off around 8:30 am (latest 10:00 am). At 1,727 meters, a short 2.2 km walk takes you to the Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger post, where you complete the formal park procedures.
From here, the trail follows the valley floor through the Afro-Montane Forest Zone, characterized by towering hardwood trees, thick undergrowth, and constant birdsong. The first six kilometers are a steady, manageable ascent, allowing time to acclimatize while enjoying the forest’s calm rhythm.
After crossing a river, the trail steepens sharply, climbing toward Sine Camp. This section demands effort but rewards it generously. Expect sightings of blue monkeys, abundant forest birds, and lush vegetation dripping with moss and lichen.

Enock Falls
Just 200 meters from camp lies Enock’s Falls, a striking waterfall framed by hanging vines and bright green lichen—one of the most photogenic spots on the lower Kilembe Trail.
Sine Camp sits on a narrow forested ridge, offering views down to a series of rapids and waterfalls crashing through the valley below. The camp’s wooden huts are sheltered among tall trees, and evenings are often spent around a campfire, sharing stories with guides whose lives are deeply tied to these mountains.
Day 2: Make your way to Samalira Camp, situated at 3,170 meters above sea level.
Altitude: 2,596 m → 3,170 m
Distance: 4.1 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
The trail climbs steeply into the bamboo zone, where towering bamboo stalks form a dense, almost otherworldly corridor. The ascent is demanding but visually rewarding, with frequent openings revealing layered forest below.
Higher up, patches of mixed forest appear, rich in fruiting trees that attract diverse bird species. You may hear the unmistakable call of the Rwenzori turaco, a spectacular bird with crimson wings flashing between the trees. During drier months, Malachite Sunbirds descend from higher elThe plants change into the Heather Zone at about 3,000 meters. This zone is home to huge heather trees that can grow up to 15 meters tall.ather trees reaching up to 15 meters tall. Their moss-draped branches create a surreal alpine atmosphere unique to the Rwenzoris.

At 3,147 meters lies Kalalama Camp, an alternative overnight site with sweeping views across the foothills toward Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park. From here, the trail follows a mossy ridge before descending briefly into a flat alpine valley dotted with giant lobelia, one of the Rwenzori’s iconic plants.
A final short climb leads to Samalira Camp, nestled in a shallow basin with expansive views of surrounding ridges and valleys. The setting is quiet, dramatic, and distinctly alpine.
Day 3: Descent to Base Camp
Altitude: 3,170 m → 1,450 m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
The final day retraces the route downhill through the heather and bamboo and back into the Afro-Montane Forest Zone. Descending offers a new perspective, with increased chances of spotting birds and primates active in the lower forest.

Near Omusita Rest Area, hikers can either continue directly down or branch left toward a trail following the Nyamwamba River, a particularly scenic section where the forest feels older, denser, and more atmospheric.
The trek concludes at the park entrance and returns to the base camp at Kyanjuki.
