This 2-day Rwenzori hike provides an excellent opportunity to see Uganda’s most stunning mountain range without climbing the highest peaks. It is ideal for short safaris or weekend holidays.
The Rwenzori Central Circuit, Kilembe Trail, and Bukurungu Trail are among the most popular paths in Rwenzori Mountains National Park. All hikers who embark on the Stanley Ascent find them appealing. The Mahoma Trail and the Kazingo Trail are two minor trails in the Mountains of the Moon that people enjoy for nature walks and birdwatching excursions.

The Mahoma Trail is a 28-kilometer detour that leads up the slope to Lake Mahoma, where it connects with the main Rwenzori Central Circuit trail.
Those who appreciate nature treks and want to experience the Rwenzori Mountains with Rwenzori Trekking Safaris frequently stop at Lake Mahoma in Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,650m) to Nyabitaba Camp (2,650m)
Your Rwenzori Trek begins at Mihunga Gate, where you’ll meet your hiking team for a safety briefing and guide introductions. From there, the trail ascends gently into the montane rainforest, filled with towering trees, cascading vines, and the sounds of the Mubuku River below.
As you hike, your guides will share stories of the Rwenzori’s history, culture, and rich biodiversity. Observe the three-horned chameleon, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and Rwenzori turacos, which will be flashing red and green through the trees.
After 4–5 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Nyabitaba Camp (2,650 m), your overnight stop. Nestled in the forest above the river, it’s a peaceful place to relax, share stories, and recharge for the day ahead.
Day 2: Nyabitaba to Lake Mahoma (2,900 m)—Return to Base.

After an early breakfast, embark on a challenging but rewarding day hike along the Mahoma Loop Trail. The trail leads through the bamboo zone, where you’ll marvel at tall stalks towering overhead and moss-draped trees framing your route.
Upon reaching Lake Mahoma, take time to relax by its serene shores. At 2,900 meters, it’s the largest and deepest lake in the Rwenzori Mountains and offers breathtaking views, peaceful silence, and a perfect photo opportunity.
After enjoying a packed lunch and a moment of reflection at the lake, you’ll descend back down to the trailhead, closing a short, powerful journey into one of East Africa’s most stunning mountain ecosystems.
