Instead of the 9-day Rwenzori hike in Uganda, you might want to try the 10-day trek that includes Bernard’s Peak, Tetra Peak, and Agart Peak. Skilled mountain guides from Rwenzori Trekking Safaris lead this expedition, and there is only one way to reach it.
Camping amid the Mountains of the Moon is an option on the 10-day Rwenzori Hiking tour. Along the way, you and your crew will need to construct some of the less-traveled trails and routes.
Route: Nyakalengija → Central Circuit → Tetra Lakes → Mt. Bernard Ridge → Agart Pass → Back to Nyakalengija
Difficulty: ★★★★☆ (Challenging)
Best For: Experienced hikers, nature photographers, adventure climbers
Elevation Range: 1,640 m – 4,500 m
Accommodation: Mountain huts plus tents in select camp zones
Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,640 m) → Nyabitaba Hut (2,652 m)
You will be briefed on the rules and restrictions and the route to take and be introduced to the porters, guide, and chef with whom you will spend nine nights and ten days in the Rwenzori mountains. This will take place at your accommodation. Alternatively, this briefing can occur at our office after you have your early morning breakfast at the resort.
As you begin your ascent, you will pass through residential neighborhoods and open fields before reaching towering elephant grasses and deep underbrush. Walking from Nyakalengija to the campsite at Nyabitaba takes about 4–6 hours. Throughout this walk, you will navigate cliffs and bluffs while crossing the Kyohjo and Mahoma rivers. Upon arrival, you can have dinner and relax for the night. The course then climbs significantly for seven kilometers.
This forest is home to a variety of animals, including forest elephants, chimpanzees, hyraxes, black-and-white colobuses, duikers, three-horned chameleons, and L’Hoest’s monkeys. A wide variety of trees and plants can be found here, in addition to numerous bird species, such as the Handsome Francolin, Rwenzori Turaco, Long-eared Owl, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Strange Weaver, Archers’ Robin-chat, and Rwenzori Batis. Expect to encounter a few of them.
The Nyabitaba hut will serve as your dinner spot and your bed for the night.
Day 2: Nyabitaba (2560 m)-Guyereoman (3505 m)
You must leave Nyabitaba at dawn since this is the longest part of the 10-day Rwenzori Trek. It is possible to get to Guyeoman from the point where the clockwise and anticlockwise paths meet. From Kichcuhu Bridge, the path to Kichuchu Rock Shelter goes through the Bamboo Forest Zone.

After lunch in Kichuchu, there is a 6.5-kilometer (6-7-hour) walk through heath trees with old man beards. A few of the strange animals you might see on your hike are black and white colobus monkeys, squirrels, swimming ducks, and three-horned chameleons. You can have dinner and sleep at Guyeoman, which is where the trail starts.
Day 3: Guyeoman (3505 m)–Kitandara Camp (4020 m)
Beginning at Guyeoman and working your way clockwise, you’ll pass through numerous rivers and marshes until arriving at a historic rove shelter known as “the bujogolo rock.” The most thrilling part of this Rwenzori hiking expedition, guided by local experts, is this section. The Bujogolo Rock was a rest stop for the Duke of Abruzzi on his trip to Rwenzori Mountain National Park.
After a brief break, continue along the trail that will put your knees to the test as you climb steeply to Fresh Field Pass. On clear days, you can see Mount Baker and Kitandara Lakes from this vantage point. After descending steadily for eight hours, you will arrive at Kitandara Lakes Camp, just in time for dinner and an overnight trek covering approximately seven thousand meters.
